Author Topic: Tesla Motors "tears down" all of their patents  (Read 1383 times)

Tesla Motors, known for their electric cars, have recently decided to tear down their giant wall of patents in the spirit of the open source movement (doesn't really apply to cars, but they got the right idea.) Not only does this mean anybody can use the technology, but they had another reason too: they did this to increase their competition, so that other companies are more aggressive with electric cars to lower carbon emissions.

Major props.

All Our Patent Are Belong To You

EDIT: They still own the patents, they just won't be suing over it.

They aren't necessarily tearing down their patents, they're just being extremely lenient. They are giving those in good faith a chance to forward the cause for electric vehicles, while building onto the Tesla name. Electric cars take up 1% of the market, there is no "competition". They are leaving some patents up so they can still control what is on the market, but only there to strike down those who would do harm.

Reading more closely, this is the case, but it's still an awesome decision.

>removes patents
>someone else patents
>Tesla goes bankrupt

nice

I should change the title, as Shadows pointed out they didn't abandon their patents, they just said that they won't really give a stuff if you violate them.

>fails to read article
>looks like a dumbass

nice

I hadn't even heard of Tesla before playing GTA V, seeing the Coil Voltic, assuming it was based off of an Elise but then looking it up.

I'd like to have an electric car some day, as long as there are a decent number of charging stations for traveling (which it looks like they're planning on covering)

i read a comic about them in theoatmeal, they sound pretty cool

hopefully this helps the environment somehow

No, you read about a person named Nikola Tesla. Unless they released a new comic. Just checked, they did. Nikola Tesla was really awesome too though.

yah, this. I also have a friend who lives on a street where someone owns a tesla. We also know a family who pre-ordered a model x.

I once saw a tesla car carrier that had like 10 model s's on it.

So close and only one Tesla for me. Oddly enough.

It'd be neat to have one but they cost a lot
But they're a lot more efficient so props :)

when i went to san fansisco a couple of years back, we stopped by a tesla dealership (we heard about them from watching bbc's top gear). they're really good looking cars.

nice to hear that they're making the market more open, too
