Author Topic: cool old computers  (Read 5497 times)

I remember seeing a CRT with an extremely high res. Higher then anything today. Its still not worth it though. You also can get a CRT for like a dollar at your local goodwill if you really wanted one, but the resolution is most likely trash

There was a monitor that was higher than 4k? The only thing I know that was old and was pretty good was the IBM T220/221 which had a pretty high resolution. It also had a really high pixel density. But I'm pretty sure modern 4k monitors are better. But if there is a CRT with higher than 4k I would like to see it.

The only thing CRTs had over LCDs are that they had a higher refresh rate. But now LCDs are almost catching up with CRTs.

Well I mean if you're cool with a small stuff resolution monitor or having everything be almost impossible to lift CRT monitors aren't stuff. So if you're a reasonable person CRTs are stuff. Also beige is the grossest computer color ever, I have no idea why anyone would want them back ever. I figure anyone saying they're cool never actually lived through using them, because they were ugly to everyone then and are still ugly today.
my current secondary monitor (made in 1999) is 20", supports 1600x1200 resolution, and can go up to 85Hz refresh rate. the only thing i disliked about it was that it was a little too dark for my liking and i couldn't find a way to fix that without messing up the colors.

that was the monitor.

that was the monitor.

It's an LCD and it also probably cost a stuff ton since it was used for mostly medical applications or sciencey stuff. Those were way ahead of the curve on technology but now that 4k is becoming common place the next few years are gonna be great for monitors.

And none of those are really that impressive and haven't been for a while. Also a 4x3 ratio is just awful. I guess for 1999 those were pretty far ahead, but I'm pretty sure LCDs made it up to those resolutions pretty quickly. I also really don't get the whole deal about refresh rates being so important, especially if your game isn't running at those frames

Surprised nobody's mentioned the Commodore 64 or the Amiga.

Both seemed great, I wish I could've used one.

That's really the only time period of old computers I think was really cool. People were buying kits and actually soldering their computers together.

oh yeah another thing I forgot to mention is that both computers had great sound generators.

the Commodore VIC20's sound generator is detuned but demoscene programmer viznut discovered a trick that allows you to mess with the VIC20's pulse generator. I'd say that trick would make the VIC20 more popular if it wasn't discovered that late.

Here's a demo using the trick: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SdGkkp1aq8
