Silent hill 2 is probably the best non-indie horror game

edit: There isn't anything wrong with Jump Scares in theory. Jump scares by themselves are bad. They almost need buildup before the jumpscare, otherwise it's just a cheap tactic to shock somebody.

Five Nights at Freddy's achieves a good jump scare through the buildup. You know it's going to happen eventually, that's what makes it creepy. The jumpscare itself isn't what's important, the tension and buildup is.

seriously, if we used the "buildup" argument for any jumpscare game, than practically any game could be here. plus, FNAF really isn't the best of games due to it's ridiculous overcompensation of "oo spooky robots"

and don't give me the argument that the story is interesting, because it's literally all speculative

I could say gmod is an allegory for a coma, and give millions of reasons why, but it'll still be gmod

it's just a regular, second - project game that got popular off of youtubers that said things were spooky like the millions of other horror games; it's just that they made multiples over multiples

I was just giving an example of how jumpscares could be executed well. Anything that uses jumpscares as a cheap means to shock players is not executed well.

Like I said, jumpscares in theory aren't bad, it's just that they're overused in bad form.

Literally all of the story is speculation? I'm pretty sure there's a lot of canon story stuff that's been made clear ingame. What's wrong with having a subtle narrative?

You could, but it wouldn't make a shred of sense considering garry's mod is a sandbox game with no underlined plot.

I never said that five nights at freddy's is a good game, just that it did jumpscares right :v

yeah, good points, I guess it's better than most crappy horror games

This is the problem with the indie horror genre right now. At least FNAF had effort put into it, jesus lol
