Whats the difference with mousepads?

I'm thinking of buying a new mousepad since my little sister screwed up my best one with a hand support and soft covering. I was also thinking about the difference, yeah the smoothness and comfort, but is there any key factors I should know?

Something the article doesn't say: Bigger mousepads are good for first person shooters, since you use lower sensitivity with those, and have a much, much better accuracy if you move your hand much more
