How to keep socks from unthreading/pilling?

So as some of you may know, I live and breathe sock game. Love it. Except, sometimes I have to carefully select socks based on how sturdy they are, and even then, a $15 pair of socks unthreads relatively quickly and looks like stuff. How do I prevent this?
