They weren't made to be "not official".
They're still official Star Wars material.

But there now happens to be 2 Universes, which is pretty standard for any Comic Book company.
There's now the Canonical Universe, which includes all of 6 films, Clone Wars, and the new Comics.

And there's the Legends Universe, which includes all 6 films, Clone Wars, and all the old comic books, videos, games, novels, etc...

There was such a heap of material produced to explain what happened before Episode 1 and what happened after Episode 6, that it just left no room for anyone to produce a film.
They would have to just follow exactly what was already written by numerous comics, and there's no fun in that. It doesn't give them artistic license, it doesn't give them creative leeway, and it means that if they adapt it directly to film it probably won't feel the same as the comics anyway, like when a book gets adapted into a film.
If they were to follow the story of the Comic Books they would just be pandering to the Comic Book fans, and they couldn't match what has been in the comics, and they'd piss that fanbase off anyway.

You can still go and read all the old comics, same as you can play all the old games, and watch all the Ewok movies you want.
But we get a brand new Star Wars adventure that's not already been spoilt and given away, and has instead had time dedicated to writing it specifically for the big screen.

Remember when badspot was contacted by Disney? Pretty sure they paid for a flight to have a meeting with him, I'm glad he didn't sell out.
That was Lego.
They actually stopped contacting Badspot. He never cut ties between them, Lego did.
Had they kept in talks with him, who knows, maybe Blockland would have become an official Lego product.
