Because despite horrendous reviews it made a stuffload of money.

It cost $150 million, and made back $131 million in the US, which would normally mean a film wouldn't have a sequel.
But it then made a further $319 million outside of the US, so it made a profit of $300 million.

They don't give a stuff if it does awfully, so long as it makes a similar amount of money.
And if places like China or India enjoy it then it's going to be successful even if it's despised in America.

They'll have to produce second sequel series to make up for a second Shyamalan film.

Its ok guys, nobody ever said he needed to direct the movie adaptation of the Korra Series, lets hope someone else makes that adaptation.

m night shamalamadingdong should direct the new star wars movie

Nickelodeon 90's - "Here's some cool cartoons with effort!"

Nickelodeon TODAY - "Remove those good shows, lets go with soap opera! It'll get us profit!!!" $$$

pretty sure hes calling avatar a soap opera
even so Avatar is about a decade old

maybe the director won't have creative control wrestled away from him this time
iirc the movie was supposed to be more faithful, at least until the executives got their hands on it
