Author Topic: Where does Windows store saved passwords?  (Read 457 times)

Say I was to come across an old hard drive backup of mine (vhd) and wanted to recover a saved password from the browser. How would I go about doing so? Can any data be found in registries or is it all hashed and stored in the browser's files? I'd assume that if it's hashed in the browser's files, the hash key would be somewhere as well? I need access to an old Google account and this was before the days of phone verification and such, and it was my first account so it wasn't linked to another email for recovery.

Google Chrome stores passwords encrypted with Windows' per-system per-user encryption in a SQLite database. It'd be more viable to just boot from that hard drive and visit chrome://settings/passwords.
