how do i prevent steam CLIENT updates

steam is great and all but i'm constantly annoyed by how the steam client downloads updates first, THEN asks me if i want to update
and i prefer to be able to control whether i am downloading something or not

so tell me, is there any way to prevent or control these annoying automatic updates?


disclaimer: this is NOT about game updates. only the steam client updates.

I'd check to see if you're not in any steam client betas in the settings as those update way more frequently, because I don't know of a way to my knowledge.
