Author Topic: Are interiors/maps ever coming back?  (Read 2269 times)

I feel like the "majority of servers were using slate or some variation thereof" type statement is deceptive. Because yeah I saw a lot of freebuild servers or private (I'm making some cool thing) servers with a population of like 1 or 2 players. The really popular servers though (floating 20 or more players) tended to use complicated maps.

I liked maps, they made my job easy, all I needed was an idea and I could just use some default terrain mesh to get it done. Now I have to assemble a team just to create terrain that can work within the confines of whatever I'm doing; which means little to nothing ever gets done, lol.

RIP maps though. Guess I need to get over my laziness or something; though I gotta say, those 60 player survival servers using rotondo's old zombie mod (Which he really needs to fix btw) and the old GCF city maps were something else.

luckily soon there's going to be the procedural terrain generator so you can be lazy in building terrain again

when it comes to map design a generator won't really cut it, at least when you're talking about a map for something like a deathmatch
for rpgs and stuff like that it doesn't particularly matter I guess

on the other hand, if you are making a map and that matters a whole lot to you, you probably already know how to make terrain that will work well
so

edit: also worth noting that probably very few maps we had were actually created with that kinda stuff in mind

The generator would only be the start, imagine a brick terrain editor where you have brushes to shape the terrain and similar stuff.

Though I really doubt this is going to happen, the thing is pretty much at the limit of torkscript...

Do people still use the Rotondo Zombie Mod?

It's broken, so no

I think k9 kid uses it, it works pretty well on his server somehow

And he still is able to do stuff with it.  It is amazing.
