yesterday was the 95th anniversary of the foundation of the people's republic of china. president xi jinping delivered a speech praising china's exceptionalism, and said some pointed remarks about the UN vote happening today, like (paraphrasing): "no country should expect to compromise its sovereignty... we are not afraid of trouble... and any third party ruling (UN tribunal) is not acceptable."

the UN met with a 5 party council today to vote either in favor of china's continued building of artificial islands in the south china sea or the philippine's territorial integrity to fish nearby. the results are to be delivered july 12th, but china has already announced that if the vote is not to their liking, they will defy it

the US has sent warships into south china sea waters already as tensions began to mount. vietnam, the philippines, china, taiwan, and all other neighboring countries have claims to the body of water, so china's continued delinquency can't promise anything good

TL;DR : if UN votes that china's island building is illegal, china will keep building anyway

in the end China doesn't care about the UN, just like Japan didn't care about the League of Nations

I'll start stockpiling my canned goods then

Oh dear.

Have they actually started building yet? Is there still time to negotiate moving the site of the islands?

they've been building artificial islands for a couple of years now. they're made out of reinforced concrete and whatnot, so I'm not sure moving them is even in the realm of possibility now

future times are weird. who would have thought that one day we'd be disputing the territories of manmade islands? that's wild

It's mostly disputing the water around the islands

i have played enough battlefield 4
lets go boys

isnt this whole thing about expanding their ocean border by saying that they have land out there

please tell me this isn't what this is actually about

It's what this is about

"China appears to be building a network of island fortresses to help enforce control of most of the South China Sea"

Joking aside, yeah this does seem pretty sketchy on China's part.
Why can't fighting over territory be a thing of the past?

We've had a world war started by a lucky sandwich break, let's not have a world war started by piles of concrete in the ocean.

Hmm. Maybe the U.N. will come up with some sort of regulation on artificial islands-
