Would I have to model just one version of the weapon, or do I have to put a duplicate side by side?

look into weapon_gun_akimbo

judging only from guns akimbo the answer is no, you only need one version

You sure? I've noticed the guns_akimbo has a different model than the regular one
Also I don't have any .dts importer so I can't be helped from looking into it

trust me, a .dts importer won't exactly help you for guns akimbo

but no look into the actual script it uses the gun from weapon_gun

Nope, it's the same model.

Basically you're just making an extra image datablock that mounts onto the left hand, mounting it and unmounting it when appropriate, and telling it when to fire.
