Author Topic: are degrees from online schools less valid than a public high school degree?  (Read 616 times)

No. I take 3 online AP classes and they have the same credit worth as my regular high school classes, factor into my GPA and colleges look at it as a regular class

my friend thinks there are tiers and it goes from public/private school > ged > online school

No, not for highschool

For university I say it matters, but for high school no one cares

not less valid, but theres def a stigma that comes with online classes/GED's. youre regarded by both employeres and colleges as less motivated compared to normal graduates. with colleges, youll have to overcome an extra obstacle by proving yourself with your essay and act/SAT scores. with employers, they might not even ask you in for an interview if they see you just have you GED and a pretty average college record (depending on the job of course)

it also depends on how many online classes your taking. like if your only taking online classes and basically being homeschooled, it probably doesnt look as good. but if youre taking like two online classes and theyre AP or college level classes like perry said, that looks better.

having taken two years of online school i can say it takes considerably more motivation than a regular school, along with a lot more self-responsibility

Depends on your definition of 'validity'. It absolutely looks worse on paper than a traditional diploma.

That being said, it's a million times better than no diploma at all.

i mean im sure they are, and thats something you could argue in an interview with a college/employer. im saying that a lot of dropouts also take online classes because its an easy way to graduate and they dont have to attend class everyday if at all. to an employer looking at a resume who doesnt know how credible whatever online hs you graduated from is or how hard the classes were (idk how that really works so i could be wrong), he might put your application aside

yea i just reread what i quoted and realized you were talkin about how employers look at it; mb lol

I'd argue that, to somebody who cares, private > public > online > GED

yeah id say a normal online degree over GED too because im p sure you can get your GED through online classes as well and its just overall incredibly easy to get
