You can't do that if you say a=b then a-b will be 0 so at step 4 your equation evaluates to zero. All you are proving is that 1*0 = 2*0 which is 100% correct.

No step 4 itself is valid but from step 4 to 5 you're dividing by (a-b) which is zero. You can't divide by zero.
