you aren't supposed to know a lot of it. in state standardized tests like the ACT and SAT it's not a bad idea to go into the exam mostly blind. you need to find your areas for improvement, iron it out, and take it again

this, I took the exam three times and by my third attempt I knew the thing in and out

most colleges will only count your highest scores in each section too, which is very relieving

just remember that the point of the act/sat is just to suck money out of you. it relies on your memory more than your other skills.

Yeah, and it's easier than it looks most of the time.
Just remember, there is a time limit, and you only get points deducted if you answer incorrectly. If you don't know the answer, don't guess.

I have some major gripes with standardized testing but the reliance on memory isn't one of them. Rote memorization is bad, but you have to memorize certain things to know certain things. Even garbagemen have to remember which lever picks up the trash.

that's muscle memory though, they do that stuff regularly

nobody cares enough or does advanced math enough to make it work like that

I think the issue with math is that it's too easy to teach people 'steps' to finish standardized tests rather than explaining what's actually going on. A couple of the explanations I wrote earlier in the thread are too step-wise, but people who work 5 days a week in schools should try to teach comprehension rather than 'correctness'.

yeah i don't ever recall being taught "theory" of math. i was just taught to solve a particular problem this way, or i would find an easier shorter way to do it.
