Author Topic: english-language expressions that are grammatically wrong or ambiguous  (Read 1709 times)

In modern colloquial english, the phrases mentioned in the op are not incorrect.

write a sentence using the grammar that those phrases use, and it won't be colloquially correct. obviously the phrases are themselves correct, but that's what i'm pointing out here

i'm going to store

i'm adding salt to burger

you should go to movie

not look

First of all, those phrases are not correct because you did not add 'the' before the object.

Correct ex: I am going to the store.
Incorrect ex: I am going to store.

Unless you are talking about storing something for the winter, in which case you should still be adding an object to be stored after 'store'.

From the OP:

Using 'add insult to injury', we could say "Doing this would be adding insult to injury". Then again, the verb would need modification in order to be put in a sentence like this one.

that's literally my entire point

No one says "i'm going to store" or "i'm adding salt to burger" or "you should go to movie". People do say however, "To add insult to injury, i think that..." which is correct grammatically as well as "It's a far cry from x...". The phrases in the OP aren't meant to be said independently except for "welcome home", "never mind" and "go to bed" (which are not incorrect at all)

forget is you talking to

no stuff sherlock, that's why i wrote those examples - using the same grammar as the expressions in the OP

the entire point of this thread is to point out expressions which are seen as valid despite not following conventional grammar rules. you're literally pointing out what i'm pointing out
