Author Topic: If an add-on isn't enabled, do you still download the models from the server?  (Read 853 times)

I would assume that you wouldn't have to download the models and such for an add-on that isn't enabled, however EVERY TIME I join a server I download like 364789784329 guns, .... in a Freebuild server.  Are people really that handicapped that they leave every gun imaginable on for a freebuild server?

Yes.

Yes, because who knows. Maybe we well be building an epic mansion and host says "K GUISE TIEM FOR HALO RPG!!!!@!#@!!!!!!" So they say that they need every single possible loving gun.

Yes, you do.

I hope and pray and I'm sure there are others, too, that pray, that people turn off the add-ons before they start a server.

me to, I hate when I try to get on a server, only to learn it has a 15 min loading time because the idiot forgot to turn off add-ons

No, you don't. Datablocks that use the model are not created until the script it is defined in is exec'd. Datablocks are sent to the client while loading. If there is no datablock sent using that model, the client won't download it.

That's what I thought, but I have no idea how Blockland's Add-On System works.

People have a lot enabled and its usually in the wrong places. Get over it.

By the way, don't expect anything short of a half-hour loading time if you decide to visit my server, but you'll be banned for asking how long the load is anyways, so you might as well get it over with.

The main thing that makes you have to download that many guns/models, every time is not how many exist on the forums - it's how people install it. Some people decide to extract the mods to Add-Ons (rather than the main folder as most do), some to Add-Ons/Add-Ons (for unknown reasons), or Add-Ons/something/Blockland (I've seen this), Add-Ons/Shapes or even the last folder created - usually by another Add-On installed wrong, giving you chains of Add-Ons/Add-Ons/Add-Ons/... So you end up download the same model about five times, which is pointless.

[five times from five different servers, I mean]

Idea: When a model for something cannot be found when joining a server, search for other dts files with the same name - compare the MD5 hash (unique way of identifying files) and use that model instead if they are the same?

i try to turn of all add-ons possible when i start a server but there still is a hex of a lot of addons
