How to download add-ons?

Hey guys
Im on a mac, and I was wondering how to download add-ons, specifically where
(E.g. Where would I save a Map, Skin, Weapon)

Looking at the stickies in the top of the add-on forums I see: Add-On folder!

1. Put zip in addons folder.

Does it matter if it's not a zip?
Or if it's not a zip will it not work?

It has to be a .zip or folder. Either way, both must have a correct name (Type_Name). There must also be a server.cs and a description.txt inside them too. You shouldn't have to worry about this if you're downloading.
