How do you turn off your chat box?

Use F5 to turn off player names and the crosshair.
I think it gets rid of the chat aswell.

Pressing Page Down on the keyboard will get rid of it, but if someone talks, it comes back, but for a few seconds though

You can adjust the amount of time text stays in the Page Down mode, too. It's somewhere under the options menu.

Page up lets you scroll the chat up, page down, down.

You can also get a HUD hider, which makes things nicer for video recording.
