In order to make sure the DM is successful, I can't go overboard on the details. That, and it would just get in the way.
The key is to make details that don't effect the gameplay, as it is first a DM, second a build. Players shouldn't have anything to get caught on, or stuck on in the main parts of the battlefield.
As for the stair thing, elaborate. If you mean like how I used stairs instead of a ramp, its because certain classes in my Class-based DM mod can't go up ramps very well.
