I don't think it's possible to use Sketchup for modeling. Blender, no the other hand, is good too ;D

There is a 480 hour trial available if you can't afford it. Just dig through the site.
Then you can import that .3DS mesh directly in Milkshape3D and add bones, textures, fix smoothing groups, etc.
