Avatar Trans-ing

I need to know how to make the background of my avatar transparent. Don't say it goes in "help" because it isn't Blockland related. I figured Off-Topic was just the best place for it.

What program are you using/do you have?  If you don't have anything besides paint you can use Phoenix to edit your avatar, or you could download something like the gimp or paint.net.

Much thanks, I'm using Photoshop (should I assume it doesn't work as a jpg?). Also, I'm on a Mac.
