Not the issue.

James, you have either a bad installation of Windows, or your computer is overheating.

I haven't gotten the BSOD since Windows 98. If you have Windows 98, I suggest you upgrade.

Last I checked, windows 98 doesn't say "Windows XP" on the logon screen.

Haha, owned.

Hooray for a burned version of Windows. :/
If not, hooray for a damaged disc/laser/disc drive. :(

When the black screen first appears hit the key to enter the BIOS setting.
Set the boot sequence to check the CD drive first.
Place the Windows OS disk into the disk drive.
Restart the computer.
Initiate the windows repair utility.
Once finished, remove disk and reboot.

Yay, I get to call dell and ask for an install disk.

In what rughugger said, you might wish to disable page file systems of the virtual memory. Then check if you have bad ram.

lol where did I say that?

I had this problem which was caused by lack of ram and kicking in the paging file system which uses the disk as a temp ram by portioning off a bit of it. In the long run it can cause disk read errors that can give you the BSOD.
