I'd say get a new computer if you want to do real gaming. Upgrading that and trying to run a good game nicely and smoothly will be near impossible.

I would also suggest the HD 3450.

He only has $50 to spend, how exactly is he going to afford a new computer, let alone a gaming rig?

You have an AGP slot. All the technical specs can be found here.

How about an ATI Radeon HD 3450?

Can't find a comparative benchmark between the FX5500 and the HD 3450 to prove it, but I am certain it would be a much better choice.
I think your right. But more spec would be nice and they are a pain to find.

or you could just, you know..

order it off newegg..

I found a guide on updating your graphics card and it suggested if the computer is 3 years old or older you should buy a new computer instead of replacing. Mine is about 6 years old should I replace it? Does replacing make sense?

Yes you should buy a new computer, but you don't have the money for it, and the chance of a kid saving up enough money to buy a good computer for gaming is pretty hard. (However I managed to do so, saving up $758.05, took a little over a year.)

I would suggest you buy the graphics card off of Newegg.
