That goes the same with handicaps. There ARE people in the world that are gay, and there ARE people in the world that are handicapped. And we make fun of them. It could've been us.
I don't use "gay" or any synonym as an insult, it's just stupid. Recently, some (mediocre) writer in our school paper complained about "gay" and "handicap" as insults. For "gay", I can see why. However, handicap makes perfect sense. When I call someone handicapped, it's the same as calling them dumb, slow, or stupid. In-fact, the definition refers to calling someone an idiot.
handicap:cause to move more slowly or operate at a slower rate; "This drug will handicap your heart rate"
be delayed
check: slow the growth or development of; "The brain damage will handicap the child's language development"
decelerate: lose velocity; move more slowly; "The car decelerated"
idiot: a person of subnormal intelligence So from now on, don't lecture people on improperly using "handicap".
