how do u build without saying "invalid brick" place a 64x64 baseplate?

when i go in on any map slate,the slopes,misty mountain or any others (my add-ons) single player and online when i try to place a brick a window comes up and says "invalid brick" place a 64x64 baseplate first. i wanna build other stuff too, like something small but with that i cant.  plz help tell me all u can plz.- AJCW                   :cookie:x1:(
