HAnd held laser weaponry

First off I just want to make sure that this hasn't already been created and the stuff I've found isn't old news or whatever so, Have any of the world's government created hand held laser weapons that could be used in combat between infantry units?

The finnish military has plenty of those, they even let civilians come and test them out. Really cool when you can vaporize the targets at their shooting ranges...

Hmm this doesn't appear to be sarcasm so I'll respond with a cool.

The word you're looking for is Directed-energy weapon, and yes there are quite a few of them out there. The portable ones are mostly Non-Lethal weapons and Tesla-like guns (electrolasers) since those have allot less issues like Blooming (which in the electrolaser case is actually the sought-after effect). They're top-secret though so specifics aren't very well known to the public, other then they require a monstrous amount of power to operate and thus have limited applications right now.

Interresting directed-energy weapons are ones like the mobile Microwave crowd-control systems (yes, they microwave people now, non-lethal though), and of course the insanely loud crowd control weapons.
