You're using LEGO studs, you have no room to complain about crate aesthetics.

I make a 4x4 plate for a base, then 2 4x4x1 bricks stacked, then a second 4x4 plate.

Kinda like a sandwich.

Plus, I don't make my crates like that.
I have the same outside, but on the inside I make it look like it's stacked planks (two plates on top of eachother with one color, then another two with another color, etc.)
