I remember this one year we had the typical desert monsoon. We normally shut off all the electronics and stuff when a storm is closely approaching, but the storm was still about ~20 miles away, yet lightning struck the transformer on a power pole only about 100-150 feet from our house. We were without power for about 8 hours, lol. Fortunately, our phones were working since phone jacks have a little bit of electricity in them, the power company called us every 30 minutes since we made the complaint.
We're lucky there wasn't a power surge.
