Author Topic: A few things on starting a server.  (Read 609 times)

Don't worry, this isn't about forwarding ports or anything. I just want to ask a question or 2 about how it works once its done.

Lets say I start a dedicated server.
1: Does my computer have to be on for the server to be up?
2: Will it slow down anything else on my computer if I do anything else while its running?
3: If I have nothing running but Blockland while I'm in my own server, dedi or not, will there be lag? Or will it depend on my connection strength, or my location compared to everyone else?

I have cable internet and my computer has 900+GB memory, 780+ memory not being used, incase that has ANY relevance on it.

Forgot to add, and theres no Edit button.

I ALWAYS keep my addons limited because I know how that effects lag sometimes. 1 or 2 weapon sets, and maybe 3 vehicles.

Well, to be honest, there are so many variables which can effect lag its best just to try out and make sure you ask your friends if its lagging. However... for your questions -

1) Yes, and Blockland has to be up if non-dedi, if dedi, only the console has to be up
2) If low bandwith you will feel internet lag, and if low memory yes, as much as normal blockland I believe.
3) Maybe, Connection strength, memory amount, location, other programmes etc.

Honestly, you seem like you would be an intelligent host and I hope you decide to host. I can't forsee an immediate problem if you try.

Based on that, I think I'll stick to non-dedi since alot of my computer time goes to high requirement games like Left 4 Dead. So for the sake of my server people, I'll just keep it non-dedi.

Thanks for clearing that up. I had an idea it was like that, but wasn't sure.
