Noob is actually Newby, which IS a real word. Noob stemmed off from it, i presume, when some dumb ass without the e and w keys decided to spell Newby.
Long story short, It IS a real word at a stretch.
Off topic again: I just went through google chromes word check system, and for "Noob" it asked if i wanted "Boob" wtf
