I'm talking specifically about the operating system, not the hardware since there are 6-7(?) phones that run Android OS right now.

It does suck, but the iPhone app store does the same thing. There are now about 6 different generations of the iPod Touch and iPhone combined, and not all apps work on every single platform. It's almost inevitable that there are going to be different compatibility issues between different platforms for certain apps.
