What is my computer doing

So I was inserting an SD card into into my computer (It was an adapter for my micro SD card) and then all of the sudden my computer just froze. Nothing was working and I couldn't do anything at all. And I don't want to reset my computer because I will lose a lot of stuff that wasn't saved. I have never had my computer freeze like this, so I have no loving idea why it did this.

It most likely wasn't the SD card that did this, but I have no clue as to what might have done this.

If it's totally frozen you can't do anything but reset. Assuming you have Windows XP it'll give you hopefully a detailed technical report that you won't understand. If you have Windows 7 it'll give you a simplified explanation of why it froze up.
