Warning: noob question: what excactly is a clan?

I mean, I see all these clans, but do not understand what purpose they serve, or which to join, or whether to join one. could someone with a bit more experience help me out here?

What purpose they serve?

They are communities where people can come together and do what they love as a group.

Deciding on what one to join is your personal preference, i would read each group to see what they do and decide.
