Trouble with joining my friend's server

Sometimes when I get on and I want to go to my friends server it is up but the ping is ---, but through IRC I ask him if anyone has joined the server. He says that there are people there, but I can't get in because it won't "send the punch packets". It doesn't ever say that there is an error or anything.

Please help if you can.

Ignore Spartan923. That is not the problem.

As for the problem, I am confused as to what it could be. Perhaps Badspot himself could step in.
