Giygas, somewhat creepy or downright scary?

What were they thinking?! A happy-go-lucky game fighting weird-ass creatures, then all of a sudden, seeing a blood-red screaming swirling face in a black background with creepy music. I thought EarthBound was going to be great for kids with a happy strategy game, but...No.
