True, but that was a major modification which could be considered a whole new engine. Better graphics, more capabilities, etc. The modifications of the source engine haven't really done much. Graphics look pretty much the same, and I'm sure there weren't many capabilities added.

Even if Valve is planning a HL3 with a new super engine, there is going to be an episode three. Somewhere on some Steam page they refer to "HL2's episodic trilogy".

Well I guess it all depends on what you consider "new" technology.
