I won't use any of the weapons so far, Random crits is better then my sentry that kills nothing's crits.
And the sentry turns faster then i can so yeah. Plus i really like pistol.

That wasn't the whole reason the flaregun pales in comparison to the shotgun, it was in response to what he said. My entire argument(s) regarding the unlocks isn't all "omg it crits sux!".

There's more to it than just "crits".

The most being, like it's pathetic cousin the Backburner, it promotes WM1. The pyro loses any other trusty close range weapon and as such has to rely heavily on WM1ing into groups of enemies to net kills. Even worse is when they're pyro on pyro, there's no better chance you have because all you do is do flame damage to eachother resulting in both your deaths or one surviving with 4 health.

The shotgun is also a must have for maps that involve water, it's invaluable.
There's really no incentive to trade off to the flaregun because it's so sub-par compared to the shotgun. Like nearly all unlocks it is purely situational when the vanilla weapons can easily get the job done better.

Think of it this way.
Scout runs by, you flame him, but he gets away.

SHOTGUN: He runs out of range, you do 5-10 damage and he lives.

FLARE GUN: You shoot him, he takes 40-90 damage from crit or minicrit.
Plus he's still on fire.
