Dodger:

My friend's cousin had a program called unity or something, or something where you put textures and models into 3d enviorment, with a few textures pre loaded with the free version. You made the models and textures yourself, using programs like blender, etc. The Pro version supported more file types, and had lots of data and tools put into it, and it cost like 400$. The users could upload quality games in a pretty intelligent community.

Unity's really nice.  Also, there's UDK.  Unreal engine 3 for free!  Cryengine 3 will also be free.

laremere:

I really like using unity.  I'm still learning all of the internal workings though, (currently have a tab open for learning about RPC messaging) so I'm not quite at the point of making anything of quality with it, but hope to be soon.

Rekuddo:

I see game maker as a gateway platform to lead onto other things, sort of like how I found JavaScript my gateway into C++.

WhoDa?:

kudos to everyone who makes games with rpg maker.
I know this guy, he made a whole 24+ hour of gameplay game in just one year.
One guy, one engine and a large loving intense bitch of a game.
