Whats the best way to take down super mutants?

Fat Man is the best close range weapon, right after the chinese pistol.

Lying and skipping secondary objectives will decrease the quality of the book and reduce your overall reward if you care about that stuff at all. As I recall, the reward for bringing back a mine is a bottlecap mine schematic as well which is handy. Bottlecap mines are some of the most powerful mines in the game.
Disarming mines is pretty easy if you pay attention and move slowly, you'll need to do it anyway in later dungeons, so you might as well practice now.

I suggest making the Rock-it launcher so that you don't have to worry about running out of ammo. The schematic can be bought from Moira Brown in the craterside supply.
