My parents saw me putting toothpaste on one of my PS2 games once and thought I was crazy. :P

Put a generous amount on the disc, then rub it in really good with your finger. What you're actually doing is using the toothpaste to buff away a thin layer of the disc's surface to smooth out scratches. Think of it as sandpaper in paste form. Once you've scrubbed it, rinse it completely with water and dry it off with a soft cloth.
