Transferring game content? (Steam)

My old laptop asploded, so I now need to re-download all my Steam games. However, my friend pecon7 just got TF2, so is it possible for him to put the game content on a flash drive and stick it in my Steam folder, and it will work?

It should work since you bought TF2, if you didn't then it will not show up, I know this from trying with my brother's computer.
