How to run TF2 faster.

Ok, I have a problem. I'd like to run TF2 faster, but I can only run it on minimum settings. Until I get a new computer, I have to settle with this one. I remember somebody mentioning a couple console commands that help with this. If anybody could post those commands or think of a different way, please do. I have the game on the lowest settings, but it lags slightly, and on some maps, while loading the game stops responding completely.

Anywhere. Its a separate program. Run it before you start TF2
