I do this too. I walk beside NPCs, pretend to have conversations, dress in regular clothes besides armor when strolling around.

Also when I'm playing fallout 3, I issue battl;e commands to Jericho (my favorite follower).
It's not like he does anything but act as a bullet sponge, but eh.
