They are genetically altered Protheans just like the keepers were also genetically altered by the Reapers. They probably wanted to serve the reapers because of their modification.

Collectors are not protheans anymore. They were made from protheans but have changed an incredible amount. We humans probably have more in common with mice than collectors do with protheans.

Where are you getting this information?
The protheans have undergone extensive genetic rewrite and cybernetic modification, but nothing says they changed that drastically. It's probably a much more advanced version of the same technology that turned humans into husks.
