The leaves are just black to absorb the little light that passes through the thick atmosphere. Also there is a strange green lifeform that possesses creatures causing them to mutate and explode. On their own, they will explode when touched. When taking over a plant, they are semi-neutralized, as they no longer explode, but they will burn you.
