unable to talk to others outside of servers

Steam didn't give your computer a blue screen, all those viruses from the research you downloaded or your cursormania toolbar would do that. Unless your PC has the RAM of a 1992 DOS system.

maybe you have to actually take steps to contacting friends yourself like a real person.
you know.... emails, messengers, blogs
dont expect the game to help you keep friends. that wouldn't really make them your friends.

Try "IRC"-RTB's mod- or "DDC"-DrenDran's mod- DDC in my opinion is better because it shows
you what server your friends are in 0_o
