Day of Defeat Source problem?

I just downloaded Day of Defeat source, and when i launch it and try to join a server, there are no servers. When i try to join a friend whos playing on a server, it says "Steam must be running for you to connect to this server. Obviously, i'm connected as i was chatting with my friend. Anyone know whats wrong?
