Re-Started Modelling - Decent weapon model?

Thanks for the ahem...wonderful diagram. No translation neeed.
Based on the places the lines point to, the barrel of the gun needs detail, and as usual, the handle looks awful.
Can anyone give me ANY advice on how to make a good handle.
