Get another AV Cable, cut the insulation open and remove all the wires, put it back together somehow, then replace the old one then hide it.It's fool proof unless he thoroughly checks it which I seriously doubt he'll do, unless he see you cutting it up, and I still doubt he'll check it.
I'd really rather protect then keep an expensive piece of equipment.
He probably just told them his first name, or the state he lives in (if U.S.A.). If so, you're not protecting him.

While I generally wouldn't advise doing that, and I wouldn't do that my self for a few reasons, still, just tell him not to. Once he's told everyone it, you can't take it back, even if you do wreck his/your stuff.
